Description

Physical description

This is a jiari shakuhachi with black lacquered bore. It has a tozan-style utaguchi and decorative rings made of sterling silver and inlaid rattan at the nakatsugi joint. This instrument is well-proportioned with excellent fushi (nodal) placement and node-to-finger hole balance.

The instrument has had cracks over the years, all of which have been stabilised with inlaid rattan bindings and the inner bore has been relacquered to a perfectly smooth finish.

It feels solid in the hand, has a good weight to it and is comfortable and easy to play.

It has two hanko: one by Chikusen Tamai 竹仙 and another by Monty Levenson (空節) after he undertook repairs and restoration of the flute as well as resonance and tuning improvements. This testifies to the high quality of work undertaken and the professional standard of this instrument.
