This is a 1.9 length shakuhachi (C#) by the maker Shougetsu (松月). This shakuhachi has a kinko-ryo utaguchi, rattan nakatsugi binding and plays well and in tune. It has a warm, mellow sound and is a bit more introvert than brighter, more modern jiari.

Description

Physical description

This is a jiari shakuhachi with lacquered with black urushi on the inside, in two parts. It is from a gorgeous piece of madake bamboo, with beautiful speckled / mottled patterns near the root end and a vivid, uniform colour on the top half of the instrument. The root end has all its nodes intact and polished to a beautiful finish. It is a joy to hold and play on.

The nakatsugi joint is bound with rattan, the joint is snug and easy to separate but not loose.

There are no bindings on the flute, and no signs of repair. There is one hairline crack on the surface of the bamboo above the second finger hole, however this has been stable for years and in all this time has not penetrated deeper into the bamboo. The inner bore is in great condition with no cracks.

It is light and easy to hold and has a kinko-style utaguchi made from animal horn.

Preventative bindings can be added to this instrument upon request and at a slight additional cost.
