This is a standard 1.8 length shakuhachi (D) by the shakuhachi workshop Takeharu (竹治). It is a light shakuhachi with a smaller than average utaguchi opening which would suit someone with a smaller embouchure. It would be a good beginner to advanced student shakuhachi, or as a good spare / travel option.

This is a jiari shakuhachi with a black urushi lacquer coating in the bore, and an ABS resin utaguchi edge in the kinko style. It features sterling silver rings at the nakatsugi / joint. There is a small crack on the back of the instrument between the joint and the thumb hole, which has been stabilised with glue and two inlaid rattan bindings for preventative reasons (the crack hasn’t reached the bore). There is another small hairline crack that appears near the root end of the shakuhachi at the back again - this again has been stabilised with traditional metal studs which was often done in the 20th century to avoid using rattan bindings around the entire shakuhachi in order to preserve a good aesthetic on the front of the shakuhachi.
It has a beautiful, lightly mottled bottom half and a very attractive curvature at the root end with near-perfect alignment of the fushi (nodes) for fingerhole placement. The root nodes are all intact and beautifully polished.
Takeharu is a workshop based in Kawaguchi in Saitama (just off of Tokyo) and they have been producing shakuhachi since the 1970s. They have a reputation of producing mostly OK shakuhachi with the exceptional good or really good instruments. This is a very good 1.8 that is certainly above average for their production line, presumed to have been made before they started mass-producing shakuhachi. The silver nakatsugi is also evidence this was a higher end shakuhachi.
Black leather utaguchi (mouthpiece) cover is included and the shakuhachi will be wrapped in thick polyester bag for moisture control.
