This is a modern jiari shakuhachi with black urushi lacquer on the inside of the bore. It is in two pieces with a sterling silver nakatsugi joint and a kinko-style utaguchi. The shakuhachi has very light mottling at the lower end, the root end nodes have been polished and are completely intact. It has had no cracks and no repairs, and remains very beautifully looking on the outside. The bore is intact with no cracks and is smooth as a billiard table.
It is made by Takeharu (竹治) workshop. Takeharu is based in Kawaguchi in Saitama (just off of Tokyo) and they have been producing shakuhachi since the 1970s. They have a reputation of producing mostly OK shakuhachi with the exceptional good or really good instruments. This is an exceptional 1.7 that is above average for their production line and a very good instrument overall.
Black leather utaguchi cover is included, and the shakuhachi will be wrapped in thick polyester bag for moisture control.
If you would like a cloth (cotton) bag for the shakuhachi, please get in touch for details on what is currently available.
It has a bright otsu-no-ro, typical of modern jiari instruments. It has a clear tone throughout, playing in tune across both registers and managing dai-kan fairly easily. It is an intstrument that will suit min’yo, contemporary music just as well as honkyoku.
